The Physics Department at CEMASTEA is a pivotal hub for advancing science education across all levels of the Kenyan curriculum. The department, headed by Mr. Philip Maate, the Dean of Physics, focuses on developing innovative teaching methodologies and resources to empower educators. Our core mandate is to ensure that teachers are equipped with the latest pedagogical tools to make the teaching and learning of physics engaging and effective. We achieve this by preparing comprehensive materials for training teachers on innovative pedagogy in Physics for senior schools. Our work extends to Integrated Science for junior schools and Science for primary schools, creating a seamless and progressive learning experience for students from their foundational years.

A key function of the department is the research and development of practical, hands-on learning materials that demystify complex scientific concepts. We recognise that science is best understood through inquiry-based learning and experimentation. Therefore, our team works tirelessly to design experiments, simulations, and teaching aids that align with the national curriculum while promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. These resources are integral to our teacher training workshops, where we not only teach the "what" but also the "how" of effective science instruction. By focusing on practical application, we help teachers move away from traditional lecture-based methods and adopt more student-centred approaches. We do not directly interact with learners, but we do get to showcase our innovative science (physics) learning activities when students visit CEMASTEA.

The department also plays a significant role in organizing and facilitating specialized training programs and workshops for science teachers from across the country. These professional development sessions are designed to update teachers on new curriculum changes, introduce them to emerging technologies in education, and provide a platform for sharing best practices. We collaborate with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, other academic institutions, and international partners, to ensure our programs are relevant and of the highest quality. Our commitment is to foster a community of skilled, confident, and passionate science educators who can inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
